Dikso Records 003 - Super Sound Single Volume 3 ***updated***

Fresh meat we have, fresh music from fresh artists on a fresh and new Dikso vinyl only release, Dikso number three. We are so proud to bring you a new track from Soundcloud superhero James Johnston, new stuff from Argentina's Toomy Disco who has just hit the Beatport charts with his first artist album release, and we have the first vinyl release ever for a young and very talented guy from Australia, thee disco nation, welcome Andy Hart from Melbourne.

A1: Toomy Disco - Blues City

Toomy had the blues and created a wonderful and epic rework of an outstanding soul classic from the early 70s. Very strong Dikso opener produced by an even more talented guy from Argentina.

DIKSO003 A1 - Toomy Disco - Blues City (Snippet) by DiKSO Edits

A2: Daniel Solar - Way Back Home

He is at least 50% of Dikso. After an outstanding release on the mighty Sleazy Beats label he is way back home with some slowmo disco action at its best. Driving beats, lovely chords and vocal snippets, and we all love the laser coming in at the middle.

DIKSO003 A2 - Daniel Solar - Way Back Home (Snippet) by DiKSO Edits

B1: James Johnston - Give Me A Shock

Soundcloud superstar James Johnston, well known for his unbelievable Bill Withers rework "She's Gone", sent us this chord driven slow motion banger that is building and building and building and building and when this crazy synth hook is in, your last synapses will be opened up for sure. Be prepared for the shock.

DIKSO003 B1 - James Johnston - Give Me A Shock (Snippet) by DiKSO Edits

B2: Andy Hart - Keep On

To complete our third Dikso journey we have this so relaxing piece of disco, working on floors and sofas, in your mind as well as on your lovely bum. Andy Hart, the man behind all this, is another promising talent from the Disco nation Australia. We are sure that this won't be his last visit on planet Dikso.

DiKSO Edit 11 - Marc Poppcke - You'll Never Change A Diva

He is back, Marc Poppcke is back... A good friend, fellow DJ and definitely the midwife for this blog and stuff. It's number eleven and a little bit different, a ham of an edit. Uptempo, driving and catchy and a mash up as well.

Based on the 1981 #1 US Dance Charts smasher "Change - Paradise", Marc added a completly different vocal from Adeva's 1988 debut single "In And Out Of My Life" and some effects for full dancefloor pleasure.

DiKSO Edit 11 - Marc Poppcke - You'll Never Change A Diva by DiKSO Edits

Marc Poppcke is very busy these days. He started the promising "Soulfooled" label together with Berlin based Alex Niggemann and the Superlounge guys from Düsseldorf, is finishing his master degree at the Berlin University Of Arts and he always works on new productions and remixes. Have a look on his soundcloud page and listen to his brilliant remix for C-Rock and Brett Johnson. We are very happy about this wonderful edit that Marc has tested already in different clubs over the last months. Chicks dig it...!

Dikso Records 002 - Super Sound Single Volume 2

Orange it is. Our second release has hit the shops and the first reactions are great. Again we collected some very interesting tunes from all over the world. Expect banging house music as well as some relaxed and groovy stuff for me and the ladies. This time we have four tracks instead of three and even though this fact calls for a campaign under the motto "get 33% more..." we still serve music and no cleaning agent.

A1: Nicholas - Without You

Yes... Nicholas, no DIKSO without you. Italy's man of the moment delivers another classic rework with lovely vocals and a funky bassline that wants to be played on all the huge sound system around.

DIKSO002 A1 - Nicholas - Without You (Snippet) by DiKSO Edits

A2: Daniel Solar - Fake It

After great releases on "No More Hits" and "Sleazy Beats" that were charted by The Revenge and others Daniel is coming home. With its brilliant bassline and the nice vocal snippets it's definitely one for the club.

DIKSO002 A2 - Daniel Solar - Fake It (Snippet) by DiKSO Edits

B1: Alkalino & BlackLodge - Breaking Bad

Yeeehaaw... Anthem alert! This is gonne be huge. Pounding beats, a really dramatic dramaturgy and stabs to throw your hands and hearts in the air, in short: an overwhelming crescendo for your synapses.

DIKSO002 B1 - Alkalino & BlackLodge - Breaking Bad (Snippet) by DiKSO Edits

B2: byDesign - Get Into The Groove

Did you ever notice that the special gems are always on B2? As we knew about this fact Matthew Kyle's (aka NoRequests) second contribution for us could only happen on B2, freaky and funky, raw and uncompromising. Crazy shit for the moments when the climax of the evening has passed over and you need this little tool. byDesign are Matt and this secret guy called "B.L.". He is so secret that even Matt is said not to know his true identity. Is it Bela Lugosi? Bruce Lee? Barack Lobama? We will never know...

DiKSO Podcast 07 - The Francis Inferno Orchestra

DiKSO readers know him already, a very young talent from Australia, Griffin James aka The Francis Inferno Orchestra (sorry Grif for holding back the "the" in the past, we promise to improve...)

When disco music was on its peak he wasn't even born and if we start to talk about the roots of funk and soul music even his father might not have experienced this live and for real. But obviously something in classic dance music attracts a lot of young guys (and gals) these days. Maybe it's a backlash to the last years of dry minimalism or just the search for the history of contemporary dance music and the attempt to connect all these musical threads we pick up everyday from the web. It never was easier...

But back to FIO. "So Divine" from our first Dikso Records shows in a perfect way how to edit an electronic disco track from the early 80s in a way that creates uplifting house music without adding annoying beats or lifting up the tempo to necessarily fit in a commercial tië5to-esque playlist. But The Francis Inferno Orchstra is not only about that disco edit thing. In fact it's about slowed down house music that creates its deepness with funk and rhythm and not these endless and uniform string arrangements they want to sell us as "deep house" all the time.

We are so so proud of DiKSO podcast number seven, compiled and mixed by this young australian guy, welcome The Francis Inferno Orchestra...

DiKSO Edit 10 - Golden Fleece - Our Kid

TEN, TEN, TEN...! Count count (or "Graf Zahl" for our German readers) would have had fun with it. It's edit number ten and it doesn't come from Transylvania but from Australia, welcome Golden Fleece. By the way, Australia must be a real disco nation. There are so many promising "Nu Disco" talents from there, like Tornado Wallace or The Francis Inferno Orchestra we featured on our first Dikso Records release in August. Golden Fleece is another one.

He brings us a reinterpretation of an 80's funk classic: "K.I.D. - Don't Stop". When I wrote the first version of this text, I tried to focus on Italo Funk, the bitchy sister of Italo Disco. Together with acts like Ago, Asso or Kano, K.I.D. represented a modern and electronic form of funk music in the early eighties. But then I realised that Geoff Bastow, the man behind all this, isn't Italian at all. He was born in the UK and later moved to Germany. Working together with Giorgio Moroder and Frank Farian perfectly fitted in this disco and italo context. But he also produced a lot of German "Schlager" (is there an english word for this?) and even contributed a song for the "Eurovision Song Contest" in 1985. He died in 2007 at the young age of 57... R.I.P.

This is the original...

Back to Golden Fleece... He reduced the vocals, removed the refrain and developed beats and bass instead, a classic edit without adding any BPMs or massive new beats, it sounds so much more powerful and caused a lot of damage on nearly every dancefloor I hit with this track. Expect a respectful evolution in sound.

Dikso Records 001 - Super Sound Single Volume 1

Dikso gets physical. Right before we celebrate the 10th DiKSO Edit, we have something special for you: the first Dikso release on vinyl, real vinyl. Vinyl to play, to collect, to hold in your hands, to love. Speaking of love, in the last months we have met a lot of very talented guys (and only one gal - say hi to Maggie...) all over the internet and we have listened to so much lovely music. So we decided to use another medium that represent these tracks in their full glory: the good old vinyl. Don't get us wrong, we still like the internet as the most democratic option to provide music. But sometimes you have to create things that last longer. Future archeologists will exhume analog media like photos and vinyls as well as illegible hard disks and CDs, and guess which will have survived?

Our first issue is a mini compilation 12inch with three tracks called "Super Sound Single Volume 1". These three tracks come from all over the world: Australia, Italy and the USA.

A: Francis Inferno Orchestra - So Divine

Griffin James from Melbourne, Australia created this incredible disco stomper with a slight eighties touch that made the girls go wild on every party I played this out so far. Including lovely vocals and a so so cute piano it beams you straight to an island of your dreams. What a divine imagination...

DIKSO 001 A - Francis Inferno Orchestra - So Divine (Snippet) by DiKSO Edits

B1: Nicholas - Never

Nicholas from Perugia, Italy does something completly different. No disco, no glamour, pure sex on wax. A relaxed but pumpin house groove, a bassline that massages your stomach and a broken-hearted girl that you have to solace right now. If this is not the stuff wet dreams are made of...

DIKSO 001 B1 - Nicholas - Never (Snippet) by DiKSO Edits

B2: NoRequests - Jonesin' For You

The third track is something very, very special. Matthew McDonald, soundcloud's uncrowned king of funk and soul edits, has reduced a secret soul classic to its slowed down and effective groove, bringing in rich horns, juicy strings and some really soulful vocals from someone who is jonesin' for you. And you... And you...

DiKSO Edit 09 - Andi de Luxe - Stealo

Before I leave the blogosphere for a promising Melt! festival weekend, I would like to present you DiKSO Edit 09.

I am not really into that black music r'n'b thang. I am not a sucker for neither any bling-bling nor any big tits on pimped cars. But every now and then there is a song I go wild for. 702's "Steelo" from the mid-nineties is such a song. Some lovely chords, a bassline sampled from Police's "Voices Inside My head" and Missy Elliott on the mic - what a sensation!

To make a long story short, listen to my update with less Missy and some more sound of the police...

DiKSO Edit 08 - NoRequests - She Wants Everything

Uh huh huh... Oh...oh... Uh huh huh... Doo doo doo... La la la la...

Ad libs, this edit is all about the ad libs. Forget the rest of the lyrics, they weren't true anyway. Even if he tells us about drifting apart from a woman: Dear George, we all know by now there weren't any girls. And if so, you know why it didn't work for you. Okay, in 84 I wouldn't have come out of the closet, too. You're excused ;-)

But let us talk about music instead of trivial tittle-tattle. Do you remember your first Wham!? George & Andrew used to be those slick poster boys, whose music was always there but came second. It took me years to realize how awesome their music is. A few weeks ago for example, I recovered "Young Guns", an early Wham! single from 1982, played by the Horse Meat Disco guys on their regular night here in Berlin. Wow, In fact Wham! were one of the first commercial rap acts. Another example is "Everything She Wants" that had to be remixed by Todd Terry in 1997 to attract my attention. In fact it was one of those assembly-line-like remix productions that definitely failed the original. Not so in this case, we are really proud to present this wonderful work by mister Matthew McDonald aka NoRequests from NYC, a rework that elaborates the important parts and chanced the original pop sound into a relaxed groover that fits in a sleazy disco peak time as well as a warm up house set.

She Wants Everything by NoRequests

Argh, sorry, I have to come back to the message of this song once again. If you listen carefully you will recognize that NoRequests left only a few of the original lyrics. George's original lyrics were full of questions about "him vs. her", Matthew just kept the definite answer to all these problems:

Uh huh huh... Oh...oh... Uh huh huh... Doo doo doo... La la la la...

Word Matthew, wise man, you are!

DiKSO Edit 07 - Andi de Luxe - Let Me Love You

After Arsenii did a great job for the b-boys, edit number 7 is for the ladies. Expect some soulful vocals over a fluffy groove carpet that will make the girls ask for more...

Pimped up for the dancefloor with some added beats and a few more bpms but still enough soul to please the girls. Originally released in 1982 it was the first and the last release on the New Yorican "Up Right Records" label. The excellent first choice label re-released it in 2009 but it's still so so rare.

DiKSO Tape 01 - Terrence Parker (1996)

History... We all know about the almighty creators of electronic music. They were important for everyone even though we did not know them in their time. In most cases they have not influenced us in a direct way but for sure they did. These stories have been written countless times and you all know them.

What I want to talk about are the direct influences and inspirations. Do you remember when friends took you to your first techno party? Or your bigger brother who had a huge record collection you was lurking when he was at school? Sometimes there were small and simple things that could lead you in a completly different direction. Like a mixtape and this is what DiKSO Tape is about.

The first issue in this new DiKSO section is a tape that I have listened more than a hundred times. It is a recording of an (for me) unknown radio show from Detroit with DJ extraordinaire Terrence Parker from the mid nineties.

Disco House was not that new in 1996 and already the big thing in my hometown Hannover but this tape was different. Terrence Parker combined the old and the new in a way that elaborated and pointed out the historical connection of disco, italo and house. Okay, the heavy scratch and transformer action is not everybody's cup of tea but it's fun, fun, fun! So, this is how a simple but special mixtape became the inspiration for me to collect soul, funk and disco and search for the history of house music in a time house music wasn't even born.

Playlist:

A Side

2.) Terrence Parker - Emancipation Of My Soul
3.) Victor Romeo - You Can't Fight My Love
4.) Debbie Jacobs - Don't You Want My Love
5.) Anita Ward - Ring My Bell

8.) D Train - Music
9.) Fever - Standing In The Shadows Of Love

Sa. 24.04.2010 - DiKSO 2 @ Süss War Gestern

DiKSO blog... DiKSO podcasts... DiKSO edits... what's next? A DiKSO app? A DiKSO TV show? DiKSO potholders?

No, it's the DiKSO night @ Berlin's "Süss War Gestern" that completes the DiKSO package! Again, Marc Poppcke and Andi de Luxe open their musical box of pandora and invited the brand new label signing from "Sleazy Beats Records": Daniel Solar. Come by, grab one of a billion sofas and have some drinks with us. See ya!

DiKSO! DiKSO? Ja, DiKSO... Kein Schreibfehler!

Schon irgendwie Disko, aber auch nicht wirklich. Klingt wie Disko sieht aber aus wie House... oder Minimal... oder Techno... Diskoästhetik in minimalistischem Gewande, DiKSO...

DiKSO 2 - Sat., 24.04.2010

Lineup - Daniel Solar (Sleazy Beats Records), Marc Poppcke (Freerange Records) & Andi de Luxe (Mezzomatic)

Entry - free

Drinks - cheap & spicy

DiKSO Podcast 03 - Marc Poppcke

Let me tell you something about Marc Poppcke. Don't panic, I won't start with "how it all began", even though i could. And I don't want to tell you about his recent releases on ultracool labels like Jimpster's Freerange Records. And for sure I will not mention his international DJ gigs.

No, I will tell you about a guy that has always been this and that. Of course it's all about four to the floor, he even wrote an assignment about this fact. But sometimes it's house, sometimes it's techno and it's even trance. And this time it's disco. Or is it disco house? Minimal disco? Slowmo trance? Who cares? Marc doesn't! Everytime you thought you got him he is up for something more.

Be aware, this is nothing for purists (und das ist auch gut so!), here is DiKSO podcast number three...

DiKSO Edit 06 - Arsenii - Break It Up

After five edits from Germany, mostly Berlin, DiKSO goes international. Let me introduce "Arsenii" from Moscow.

Remember the time when Myspace seemed to be the brand new all in one promotion and communication tool for every musician worldwide? Seems that Soundcloud delivers what myspace promised. Instead of being spammed on every channel Soundcloud invites you to discover more and more interesting and promising talents, brothers in spirit or just some new music when your mp3 collection has got boring.

Arsenii is such a promising discovery. His musical range from ambient electronica and dubby techno scapes to melodic indietronic seems to include funk and disco as well. Editing Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" shows his sense of style and a refreshing and ironic disrespect to a giant of rap. Here is Arsenii...

DiKSO Edit 05 - Daniel Solar - Got The Funk

Before we present the next podcast, here is the add-on kit to the former one: an exclusive Daniel Solar edit of Positive Force's "We Got The Funk".

Originally released in 1979 on the mighty "Sugar Hill Records" label that brought us "Grandmaster Flash", "West Street Mob" and of course the "Sugarhill Gang", it is a nice and relaxed disco funk mixture that might have influenced a lot of the early hip hop heads in their own work.

Daniel focussed on the groove, reduced the vocals to some of the shoutings and developed the refrain to an inescapable climax. First tests were successful completed, I am sure your homies will dig this...

DiKSO Podcast 02 - Daniel Solar

Yeah, this is number two of our monthly DiKSO podcast series. Daniel Solar, famous for his releases on labels like "Diynamic Music" and 50% of the well-known producer duo "Solar & Poppcke", did this wonderful compilation of weirdo disco edit madness. Actually I wanted to present you my highlights of this mix but everytime I listen to it I have a new favourite. It gets fresher every day...

By the way, watch out for the new Daniel Solar 12" Super Sound Single on "Sleazy Beats" that will be released in summer and also watch out for an unreleased disco edit available here on DiKSO in a few weeks...

DiKSO Edit 04 - André Capado - Might Fine

Ladies and gentleman please give him a warm welcome: André Capado. After some minimal and deep house releases on labels like Toyroom he did this wonderful fourth issue in our "DiKSO Edit" series.

This time "Might Fine" is the victim, an album-only track from Peter Jacques Band's second album "Welcome Back". When you think of their previous hyperactive uptempo tracks like "Fly With The Wind" "Might Fine" forms such a contrast with its laidback groove and soulful vocals. André lifted the tempo and cutted the vocals. He trimmed the whole track to fit both, disco and house dancefloors.

If you like this edit feel free to check André's myspace profile. And please check other productions and projects of Peter Jacques Band's mastermind Jacques Fred Petrus like "Change" or "Revanche", he really created some outstanding classics.

DiKSO Edit 03 - Andi de Luxe - Süpersenf

The music you can find here at DiKSO ist mostly what they call slow motion disco. But let us show you a different side. I am sure when "Supersempfft" released their album "Roboterwerke" (Robot Factory) in 1979 nobody was sure to categorize this correctly. Discogs says "Krautrock", somebody from "The Rolling Stone" forum talked about "a parody on disco music", I would describe it as "Excentric Synth-Pop". Give'em a try you will be surprised.

Especially one track kept drawing my attention with its sweet vocoder solo: "Out Of Time". This vocoder vocal is begging for a spotlight and it was a pleasure to get my scissors out. Here is "Süpersenf"...

DiKSO Edit 02 - Andi de Luxe - Juicy Rain

Oran 'Juice' Jones "The Rain"? Yes, this lovely black music pussy charmer from the 80s with that innocent acting rainy atmosphere. And mates, Jones wasn't that innocent, just have a look at the record cover. He should apply for a membership in Al Bundy's "No Ma'am" movement.

"The Rain" is the newest victim for my scissor treatment. It could have been so nice to write that the rainy weather outside inspired me to that edit, but it's bloody cold here in Berlin and we have loads of snow. Oh sorry, off topic. The tempo fits but there are way too much vocals in it. And as an old 80s afficionado I love the synth part in it. What a shame it's so short in the original. But not in my version...

DiKSO Edit 01 - Marc Poppcke - No One Can Stop Me Now

One part of this blog is about new disco-edits. So I think it's time to start with it.
The first one is coming from MC Fadden & Whitehead and their big hit "Ain't no stoppin us now" on Philadelphia Records.
Released from their self-titled debut album in 1979, the song spent a week at number one on the R&B singles chart. It also proved to be a successful crossover hit, peaking at number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached number 5 in the UK. The single also made it to number ten on the disco charts. The distinctive bass hook was played by Philadelphia International Records house musician Jimmy Williams. The song eventually sold over 2 million copies and went platinum.

I really like this cheesy and melodic disco track. Especially the bassline and the strings are awesome. That's why I decided to do a more up to date dj-friendly instrumental version of it, cutting out the main parts, adding some drum sounds and rearranged it with a lot of filter action ;-)

I hope you like it!

Metro Area's "Miura" is RA track of the '00s

What a sensation, mates. "Miura" is Resident Advisor's track of the decade. Not that I am surprised as I would have chosen the same.

The fact that so many others love this track too, makes me very happy because this was the initial spark for my personal musical development during the 00's. Metro Area's "Miura" was released in 2001 as a part of the 4th EP in a series called "Metro Area" on their own label Environ Records. It was the peak of Metro Area's very own interpretation of disco music for the 21st century. In fact it represents "minimal" in its proper meaning.

And the winner is... Andi's track of the year 2009

Don't worry, I won't bother you with another best of 2009 poll. It's just about my personal favourite tune of the last year: Azari & III - Reckless With Your Love

Really don't know how to pronounce this, "Azari and Three"? "Azari and the third"? Probably this way... But i know for sure, this is a bomb! Combining the pop appeal of Inner City or Jomanda with a fat production of today. Check it...
